Vegetables are growing,
Daisies and buttercups are in bloom,
Cloudless blue skies above,
Friends are in the garden,
BBQs are smoking,
Cocktails are flowing,
Kids are playing…
All these are telling us - summer is finally here… even if it’s taken a long time to come, and it is intermittent with some British summer showers! It is here now.
Out come the shorts, flowing summer dresses, flipflops and that feeling of freedom, warmth on our faces and just summertime happiness which make us feel glad to be alive!
We love summer! The sun is getting warmer and brighter - and the days are getting longer.
This year Summer Solstice is June 20th at 11.32 pm, the Summer Solstice in the Northern hemisphere, and June 21st will mark the longest day (and shortest night) of the year. It’s a big time to party! It also partly falls on Father’s Day this year, so even more reason to get outside and celebrate this iconic time.
Celebrated around the world for thousands of years (think Stonehenge), the Summer Solstice is, unsurprisingly, a celebration centred around the sun and is associated with fertility, renewal, and light. Did you know the word “solstice” comes from the Latin words sol “Sun” and stitium “standing” On the summer solstice, the Sun’s path stops advancing northward each day and appears to “stand” still in the sky before going back the other way.
And did you know the summer solstice is not exclusive to Earth. All the planets in our solar system have summer solstices. Mars’ solstice occurs a few days after Earth’s, in June. On Uranus, the summer solstice happens once every 84 years. The next one will occur on October 9, 2069! Each season lasts for 21 years, which makes for one long winter.
So there you go!
